Multilingual Learners (MLL/ELL/LEP)
North Middlesex Regional School District (NMRSD) is committed to providing a quality education to each child. NMRSD is a low incidence district with a population of less than 30 students with a specific language group. It is important that we provide Multilingual Learners (ML) students or Limited English Proficient Students (LEP) with the appropriate opportunity to become proficient in English and provide access to the curriculum.
Traditionally, ML, EL and LEP students need to develop essential language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. To accomplish these goals, ML students receive instruction with a certified EL teacher and receive services in a Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) classrooms in accordance with state and federal laws. Services address the concepts and skills as defined in the curriculum and assist students with language development based on their individual need.
Title VI of the Federal Civil Rights Act does not permit time limitation of services for Multilingual Learners and requires that MLs be provided language support services until they are proficient enough in English to participate meaningfully in the district’s education program.
